Visit Bainbridge Island received $70,000 as the City Council this week approved the Lodging Tax Advisory Committee’s 2021 funding recommendation to support tourism activities.
Eleven entities received $225,000 of their $462,402 in requests.
The BI Lodging Association received $41,750, and the BI Chamber of Commerce $38,000. The chamber’s funding is for the Visitor’s Center.
Each year, the city allocates money from the Civic Improvement Fund to support proposals from community organizations. The funds are collected through a tax on overnight lodging on BI.
The proposals must be for tourism marketing projects, marketing and operations of special events or festivals, the operation of eligible tourism-related facilities or capital expenses for an eligible tourism-related facility. The funds may be used to create new tourism promotion programs or to support or enhance existing programs.
LTAC members include two people from BI businesses that collect lodging taxes and two people from businesses or agencies eligible to receive lodging tax funding. Members cannot currently serve as active board members or paid staff of organizations that apply for lodging tax funding.
Others funded: BI Historical Museum, $15,000; BI Downtown Association, $12,250; Winery Alliance of BI, $12,000; BI Parks Foundation, $10,000; Kids Discovery Museum, $9,000; Bainbridge Arts and Crafts, $7,000; Arts and Humanities Bainbridge, $5,000; and Visit Kitsap Peninsula, $5,000. Mobility for All’s request for $33,646 for a Bainbridge Electric Shuttle was denied.
