After acting in a repertory company, singing at Disneyland and touring Asia, at age 28, Leza Danly abruptly stopped performing. Now, 42 years later, inspired by Bainbridge Island’s creative options after moving here two years ago, her dream of a one-woman show will unfold at Bainbridge Performing Arts Center July 25-26.
Danly will perform “Soul Breadcrumbs: What pieces of yourself have you left behind?” each night at 8 p.m. She is a life coach and workshop leader, and has written a vulnerable stage memoir of how she reconciled past woundings and found an enchanted life, per a news release. It includes musical interludes written by Danly.
“This has been a 20-year journey from idea to stage, and I often wondered if I’d have the courage to share this story,” Danly said. “While it’s deeply personal, I believe it touches something universal in all of us. Moving to Bainbridge two years ago, all the pieces fell in place. Suddenly, the time felt right, and I found so much support in this creative and welcoming community.”
The show is directed by Christine McHugh. It involves adult language and highly emotional scenes and is not suitable for children ages 16 and under, per the release.
“There is so much extraordinary in the telling of one’s ordinary life,” McHugh said. “Leza’s brave journey of self-realization is a cathartic healing opportunity for anyone who witnesses it. It’s been a uniquely fulfilling experience as a director to work with a writer/performer who courageously understands the generosity inherent in making themself this vulnerable. This production is a beautiful healing opportunity for the audience.”
