At 3 p.m. Sunday, June 14, the downtown Winslow store will host three authors: Donald E. Mayer, D.L. Fowler and Michael J. Smith.

Mayer, a former Bainbridge resident, will present “Riding Kid Writes Home: The Remarkable Adventures of a Teen-age Cowboy in the Years of the Great Depression,” the story of his remarkable Uncle Carl, a splendid example of those whom Tom Brokaw called “The Greatest Generation.”

As a 14-year-old, Carl ran away from his family home in Depression-era St. Louis and went on to such adventures as cattle ranching in Texas, riding the rails, encounters with glamorous Hollywood stars and serving on the battleship USS Arizona.

Fowler, a Gig Harbor resident and author of “Lincoln’s Diary: A Novel,” will present his new fictional treatment of the 16th president in “Lincoln Raw: A Biographical Novel,” told in the voice of Lincoln himself and grounded in the historical record.

Smith, of Bainbridge, will join in to talk about his new book, “Thicket of Opportunity: How Smart Risk-Taking Supercharges Personal Success,” which looks at what smart risk-taking is and how you can use it to better your life.

Then, at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 18, store officials say they expect a capacity crowd to meet author/historian James Longhurst, author of “Bike Battles: A History of Sharing the American Road.”

This fascinating and readable exploration of the hidden history of bicycle law and policy conflicts in the United States will resonate with many islanders. Given the many social media postings about bicycle, pedestrian and auto interactions on the island, folks at the Winslow bookstore say they hope this will be a lively community conversation with some new insights.
