It’s Throwback Thursday, and time to pop open the time capsule (the February 7, 1957 edition of the Bainbridge Review) to see what the big news was all about, way back when.

Purvis Introduces Bill for Bridge to Bremerton
By WALT WOODWARD
A bill to provide traffic and financial feasibility surveys leading to the “immediate” construction of a “Bainbridge-Bremerton” bridge will be filed with the legislature at Olympia by State Senator Ralph Purvis, Bremerton, tomorrow.
The bill will ask for reappropriation of $470,500 in unspent funds allocated to the State Toll Bridge Authority for bridge surveys by the legislature two years ago.

Nicholson Claims Legislators ‘Never Heard of Bainbridge Island’
Legislators “never heard of Bainbridge Island,” State Rep. Pat Nicholson, fledgling Bremerton Democrat, telegraphed The Review from Olympia this week.
But the Western Union operator in Seattle who read the message to The Review called that a “ridiculous” statement.
Mr. Nicholson’s telegram said:
“Session half over. Have received only one letter from your area. Question: Don’t Islanders care about ferries, schools and taxes? I find most legislators never heard of Bainbridge Island.”
Then the operator said: “Why, that’s a ridiculous statement.”
“Did Mr. Nicholson say that?” The Review asked.
“No, sir. That’s just my comment,” replied the operator.
“Thank you,” said The Review.
Winslow Market’s Finances Assured
Success for the financing of a proposed super-market on Winslow Way was announced yesterday.
J. Holger Christensen, president of Bainbridge Investors, Inc. said $63,000 in stock had been purchased. The state had required $60,000.
Mr. Christensen said selling would continue to $70,000. After that, he said, the public stock offer will be withdrawn.
Robert Green, Winslow, has been retained as architect for the structure and plans may be ready for a call for bids “in two or three weeks,” Mr. Christensen said.
2 Groceries Close Sunday
Two large Island groceries which had been open on Sundays will be closed on that day hereafter for a trial period, it was announced this week.
They are: Herron’s IGA Foodliner at The Village, Winslow, and Bainbridge Gardens, Fletcher Bay.
Remaining open on Sunday will be Dick’s Market, Island Center.
“The trend of some church groups, the grocers’ association and labor unions seems to be toward Sunday’s closing,” said Gordon Herron, owner of the Foodliner.
Asked if he thought the closings would create shopping hardships on the Island, Mr. Herron said:
“This is for a trial period. If it is found that Sunday closing is not a practical thing on the Island, we’ll have to reopen. But we’re going to give it a fair trial.”
