New artists, venues at upcoming Winter Studio Tour

The 42nd annual Winter Studio Tour will take place Dec. 5-7, featuring 56 juried artists in five venues across Bainbridge Island.

The tour showcases quality, hand-crafted art, where you can meet the artists and buy directly from them, per a news release. Art includes paintings, glass, jewelry, pottery, mixed media, garden art, mosaics, furniture, and more.

Five studios and community halls are participating this year, including: The Boathouse (on Brien Drive across from the Senior Center), the American Legion Hall (across from Hyla Middle School), Elemental Furnishings’ studio owned by wood/metal artists Kathryn LaFond and George Brooks, The Filipino-American Hall, and the Masonic Center. Each location will have five to 15 artists. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

There are many new artists and art forms in this year’s Winter Tour, including lampworked glass by Laura Arns. She is a computer scientist by day and glass artist at night. Working with both borosilicate and soft glass, she creates beads, marbles, blown ornaments, sculptures, goblets, and more. It’s the precise designs that appeal to her, with her background in math and engineering. Her blown glass includes goblets and vases, in a wide color palette, the release says.

Heather Frederickson is also a new artist, offering pottery in whimsical designs that often portray her love for the sea, with starfish, and shades of blue. Falling asleep to the distant waves of the ocean translates to her joyful work. Taking a break from her massage therapy, she took a pottery class many years ago, and says, “I felt my heart explode with such joy! Working with clay brings me to a place of oneness with spirit, the vast inner landscape that weaves the world around me.”

Other new artists include Julie Poole, wildflower weaving; Judy Sorrels, mixed media; Johanna Muench, mosaics; and Crystal Ally Tran, mixed media with pressed flowers.

Studio Tour manager, Dinah Satterwhite, is especially excited about this year’s Winter Tour. With the beautiful new venue, The Boathouse (aka Rowing Center), she reports that “the studios are very well-rounded with such an amazing variety of art mediums. I’m always surprised by the new artists that pop up out of nowhere, with their exquisite artwork and creative expression. It’s so nice to organize this event and see the happy faces of customers who meet new artists and catch up with their past favorites. This is such a gem in our community, and I hope even more people discover it and find some goodies!”

For details on each artist and the studios, including a map, check out the brochures, which can be found at regional shops, or call to request one by mail. Downloadable maps and brochures can be found on the website: www.bistudiotour.com. Satterwhite can be reached at 206-842-0504.
