BHS Jazz Band 1 places first at Viking Jazz Festival

Bainbridge High School’s Jazz Band 1 wowed the judges in the 40th Annual Viking Jazz Festival in Poulsbo on Friday, Feb. 3.

Led by Director Chris Thomas, the band performed three songs in the afternoon before four adjudicators, and qualified for the evening Finals Concert with the top three bands each from the 1A/2A and 3A/4A divisions.

The band played two songs in the finals, winning first place in the 3A/4A division and also the Sweepstakes Trophy for the best band overall in all performances.

In addition, the band’s rhythm section received one of two “Outstanding Rhythm Section” awards.

Three BHS juniors — Taylor Lhamon (tenor saxophone), Kevin McCann (alto saxophone) and Henry Brown (alto saxophone) — each received an “Outstanding Soloist” award. All three also study privately with local instructor Dave Carson.

Islanders will get a chance to hear the award-winning band next week.

Jazz Band I will play at a Community Swing Dance at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10 in the commons at Bainbridge High. More information is available at http://www.bainbridgebands.org/dance.
