Best of Show goes to Katie Gustafson

Bainbridge Island celebrated a successful tribute to young people’s creativity during the 12th annual Student Art Contest at the Pavilion on Sunday, March 4.   Bainbridge Island’s young residents and students ranging in age from kindergarten through High School competed for first, second and third, place awards in eight different categories. Dinah Satterwhite, the founder and manager of the Student Art Contest, reports that there were 229 entries this year, including a great selection of creative entries in the newest category: RecycleArt.

The coveted Best of Show award went to High School freshman Katie Gustafson, for her untitled horse pencil drawing.  The judges really appreciated the attention to detail, and noticed the intricate and care that Katie put into the realism on her horse.  She won a beautiful achievement certificate, and prizes from local businesses like an art class at Winslow Art Center.

The RecycleArt category prompted many creative designs, including the first place winner’s robot by Jackson Hemmat.  Second place in this category went to Greg Millican, who made “fabric” out of woven soda can pop tops.

Each category had first place winners that received award certificates and gift certificates from local merchants, and second and third place winners received award certificates.  Thirteen Honorable Mention certificates were also awarded.  Plus every student who entered the contest received a special ribbon at the end of the Award Ceremony.

The Best of Show piece, first place pieces, and other select entries are on display at a special exhibit throughout March at the Verksted Gallery on Front Street in Poulsbo.

Next year’s contest will be held on Sunday, March 3, 2013.  Bainbridge Island students and residents aged Kindergarten through high school can submit entries according to the official rules, which will be posted early next year.
