To the editor:
As the developer/owner of Pleasant Beach Village, my goal was to make the property a south island gathering spot featuring restaurants and retailers as well as recreation and event space.
About a year ago, Matt and Rachel DeSpain approached me with their canopy tour proposal and I immediately said, “Heck no!”
As the developer of housing abutting the tour land, I am keenly aware of what might negatively affect value, and a zipline sounded like a circus act.
However, as I got to know the DeSpains and understood the nature of the canopy tour, I changed my mind. A seasonal outdoor family- oriented activity would not only be a boon to island residents, but attract visitors to our south end neighborhood. No electricity. No motors. No trees removed. A maximum of 12 participants (and average of six) per tour. Unlike an adrenaline thrill ride, the proposed zipline would be a fun ecological experience and opportunity for tree conservation education.
I have been extremely impressed with the DeSpains’ professionalism and thoughtful mindset and it was disheartening to see a group of somewhat misinformed individuals quickly denigrate the endeavor.
Vocal objections seem to be “too many people” would come to Lynwood, along with “too much noise,” and a concern of “not enough parking.” Noise from six people in the woods behind Pleasant Beach Village would surely not surpass families enjoying our other amenities. The village has 150 parking spots, and even with large weddings, we have accommodated every guest.
This spring, Matt and Rachel will open Bainbridge Island Outfitters at Pleasant Beach Village, which will offer paddle boards, electric bikes and other equipment to adventurous families. I am proud to welcome them and hope over time we can educate residents to the positive impact of a limited-scope canopy tour.
For over 70 years, I have been enjoying Bainbridge as both a guest and home owner, and I believe the island would benefit from a fun “eco-adventure” for kids and seniors alike.
