Let’s allow our elected counselors to make thoughtful decisions in a calm, deliberate atmosphere, and move on.

I have watched and read with great interest the lengthy discussions regarding the planned Cannery Cove/Strawberry Plant Park controversy.

It is very clear that there are good, valid arguments in favor of each side of the issue:

(a) Create a park primarily for citizens to actively enjoy the great out doors;

(b) Develop the property, favoring its riparian habitat over human uses; and

(c) Give top priority to emphasizing the historical heritage of the property.

I have been impressed with how well our council members and staff have listened, and incorporated many of the diverse suggestions, obviously weighing the many arguments.

Now it is time to let our council representatives do what we elected them to do, make decisions.

It is truly harmful when a disgruntled citizen doesn’t see his personal vision fully accepted, and threatens a lawsuit.

We have seen far too much of that nonsense in the recent past, with some residual suits mindlessly continuing today.

It is unnecessary, and our municipal resources are too limited.

Debate is valuable and productive up to a point.

The time has come, however, to stop that and move on to more important things.

We need to set an example for our council members and staff to follow. Let’s not mimic the old government actions that we abhorred.

Instead, let’s set the tone and demonstrate by our personal actions, how good government should operate.

I truly hope that the proponents of differing Cannery Cove Park concepts will now control their impulses and allow the decisions to be implemented without further interference.

I am convinced that the entire island will be well served by the decisions that follow.
