To the editor:

In response to Ms. Dombrowski’s Feb. 10 letter, I wanted to thank Sen. Christine Rolfes for standing up for the women of Bainbridge Island so that we have the freedom and privacy to make our own health care decisions.

More than 200,000 Washington women will gain health insurance coverage next year, and they deserve the same access to the full range of reproductive health care, including abortion, that they have today. Senate Bills 5009 and 5576 are quite simple — they ensure that a woman’s pregnancy decision is made by her and her family — not politicians or her insurance plan.

Attacking Sen. Rolfes’ Catholic faith in support of this bill is shameful. There are many Catholics in our community who believe that Catholic social doctrine means taking care of people who can’t take care of themselves.

They also believe, like our Vice President Joe Biden, that imposing their religious views on others is not appropriate in a land that values religious freedom and freedom from government interference.

If you do not wish to support abortion coverage in your insurance plan under the Affordable Care Act, there will be a plan for you, as mandated by law. However, please do not impose your beliefs on the rest of us.
