Set a time limit on handicap ferry parking | Letters, July 17

I would like to share a thought, which I’m not sure if COBI can enforce. As a person who used to take his 85-year-old father to Seattle for medical appointments during the week, I found it appalling I could never find a handicap parking space Monday through Friday in the city’s lot at Winslow.

I also find it amazing that the people who park in those spots do so by 5 a.m. every day and don’t move until 3:45 p.m. when the 3 p.m. boat from Seattle docks, because that’s when their “work day” is over.

With all the current budget issues facing the city, why can’t you simply identify these spots as five-hour maximum spaces, or you have to pay. While these people are truly handicapped and I would never question that, I do believe they are not “financially handicapped,” in which they could pay just like the rest of us since they get the prime spots to park when commuting.

By having a five-hour limit, this would allow other people who really need these spots to use them for medical appointments, etc., during the day.

If they are still full after the five hours, at least the city would be making about $20,000 a year on these spots, which could provide the monies to hire a part-time parking enforcer to handle the many ferry parking complaints your local city offices and police receive.
