To the editor:

Many of you have asked who I am voting for in the Primary for Kitsap County prosecuting attorney.

The choice is clear: I am voting for incumbent Russ Hauge. I have practiced law in Kitsap for 34 years, my wife Cris and I have lived on Bainbridge for 28 years, and have observed Russ for 19 years as our prosecutor. He is a highly skilled, ethical and professional administrator of the civil and criminal divisions, holds criminal offenders accountable, and protects the rights of victims. A recognized and respected leader, since 1997 the Washington Association of Prosecuting Attorneys has chosen Russ to represent their interests before the State Legislature on criminal justice reform.

As strongly as I support Russ, I strongly oppose his opponent Bob Scales. Observing Mr. Scales as a recent member of the Bainbridge Island City Council, I am greatly concerned about his policies of administering justice in our community.

As an example, Mr. Scales was a primary architect in attempting to move the Bainbridge Municipal Court to Poulsbo in 2010. If his vision had succeeded, our court would have been less accessible to witnesses, defendants, law enforcement and our residents. Most concerning to victims of domestic violence, those of limited resources, and their advocates, Mr. Scales’ plan would have erected an additional barrier and financial burden in seeking protection and access to our court.

Thankfully, our citizens came forward to save the court and deny Mr. Scales his misguided vision.

Please join me in voting for Russ Hauge.
