The Bainbridge Island Board of Ethics was created by the city to encourage the highest standards of public service in city government. The board is charged with promoting and understanding ethical standards and issuing advisory opinions and waivers based on the city’s Code of Ethics. The five of us on the board have served as appointed members since it became operational in 2007. We plan to make recommendations for strengthening the Code of Ethics in our next annual report, due by Feb. 15, 2009. Right now, the code applies only to elected officials, and covers an important but rather narrow range of issues. We invite citizens to assist us in formulating our recommendations. You can review the code, as well as other information about the ethics program, at www.ci.bainbridge-isl.wa.us. Please send us suggestions for possible additions or changes to the code by emailing ethicsboard@ci.bainbridge-isl.wa.us, or by delivering them to City Hall.
