Somehow lost in all the debate and discussion of things to be done on Winslow Way is the reality that those who will benefit most are the property owners in that area. The improvements will be good for all of us, but the predominant profits go to those who own and rent out the facilities there.

Owners should pay at least 75 percent of the cost, a minimal request in light of sound business economics for the city, especially now.

This is hardly an unusual idea. Cities across the country have required, nay, demanded, that athletic team owners either build their own arenas or come up with the major share of the costs. It’s only fair to the rest of the community here or anywhere else.

I raised this in another letter and before the City Council. The wonder is why our esteemed governmental leadership folks have not thought of this in the first place. Certainly it would have mitigated the growing community negative response as well as the continuous debate among council members themselves, split as they are into predictable 4-3 votes on most everything.

Let’s look at the bottom line of the property owners who will profit from any Winslow Way enhancement and simply send them the bills.
