Political satire falls flat | Letter to the editor

To the editor:

I was taken aback when I opened my copy of the Bainbridge Review to Page A4 and saw a political cartoon that depicted our current president as a dog on a leash at a dog show.

I am a tolerant person that truly respects the political stance of all of our citizens regardless of their political inclination, and as a member of the armed forces, I have sworn to defend their constitutional right to voice their opinion. But it saddens me greatly that some people have resorted to ridicule the presidential office by expressing their disdain for the current holder of that office with a disgusting and contemptible display of crude political satire.

I can understand the strong emotions, presently in play, with regard to the political scene and how they can arouse the ire of people at both ends of the political spectrum.

However, I feel that by condoning what I saw, in what I consider to be a reputable newspaper, we have exceeded the normal limits of decency. We should all show a modicum of respect for our democratic form of government by refusing to accept a continued display of this form of political satire. Do we want our children to consider this reprehensible cartoon to reflect a normal reaction, on our part, when we simply disagree with a political party?
