Out of place at the Bainbridge market | LETTER TO THE EDITOR

To the editor:

On this Summer Solstice we celebrate the changing of seasons — what better place  to gather for simplicity and real fundamental community than our Bainbridge Island Farmers Market? Here we are all farmers and artisans of a sort; most of us perfectly imperfect. Our multi-shaped, multi-colored children run about with adults here, embracing and teaching the values of diversity and seasonal change in this one intentional gathering place (during this short four hours each week).

This Solstice Saturday felt too perfect at the farmers market; I’m questioning its sense of place for the first time. I wonder if the inclusion of a booth (small local business or no) selling the idea of youth extension and body perfection via laser is all about booth rental money.

I wonder how I’ll continue to support and feel connected to this community if, in this consumer’s highly opinionated opinion, such common and unsustainable ideals take up limited space on these grounds, and such precious time in my week.
