To the editor:
On its website, Island Power touts the “clean renewable power” that a city-owned electric utility would get from the Bonneville Power Administration. But there’s another side to the story.
BPA serves its customers with power from the Federal Columbia River Power System. The FCRPS includes four big dams, on the lower Snake River, that are destroying several species of wild and endangered salmon. Populations have plummeted by more than 90 percent since the dams were completed. According to the environmental law group, Earthjustice: “An energy source that’s driving species to extinction is not ‘clean.’”
Why would we want to get our power from dams that are driving salmon to extinction?
