Growth through chamber music

This month’s chamber music program at Bainbrifdge Performing Arts carries a purposeful title not just because of the music being performed, but because of who’s performing it.

“Portraits & Self-Portraits,” featuring six works for piano solo by Mendelssohn, Brahms, Chopin, and Gershwin, as well as a freshly minted composition from islander Sarah Rimkus, portray the composers’ fascination with identity issues and creative struggles.

It also features three pianists who are members of the Bainbridge High School class of 2009: Rimkus, Donna Adele Horning and Laetitia Lehman-Pearsall.

Beethoven’s Trio for Violin, Violoncello & Piano concludes the program and will be performed by violinist Thomas Monk, cellist Barbara Deppe and pianist James Quitslund.

The concert is at 3 p.m. Sunday at BPA. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for seniors, students, teachers and military. Call 842-8569 or visit www.bainbridgeperformingarts.org.

Try out this Monday for ‘Art’

When a man spends a fortune for a plain white canvas, is it because he understands the intrinsic value of art…or is he just plain gullible?

Auditions are Jan. 19 and 20 for “Art,” Yasmina Reza’s Tony Award-winner for Best Play in 1998. Kate Carruthers will direct the all-male cast in April’s production at Bainbridge Performing Arts. To schedule an audition slot, contact BPA Stage Manager Deirdre McCollum at (206) 714-5766 or dmccollum@bainbridgeperformingarts.org.
