The story will certainly resonate with Bainbridge Islanders concerned about conservation.

Ralph is a man whose father and grandfather emigrated from Mexico before Ralph was born. From his childhood, all his big dreams have failed, thwarted by ridicule, unrealistic aims and parental control.

For a fresh start, he leaves the Midwest and arrives in Seattle, joins a plumbers union and marries Ruby. Then, in a final effort to achieve something good, he buys 22 acres on Bain-bridge Island with a vision of creating a refuge for native plants and wildlife. Every weekend he steals away to work on his secret project, which he does not share with his wife.

There are four other storytellers who help propel the tale.

Agnes is a longtime islander who lives in a cottage next to Ralph’s property and watches his every move. Lewis McArthur owns the mansion across the street. He loves golf, guns, his hot tub and Scotch, which help him endure his Bible-thumping wife Heather and his rebellious teenage son Jeff. Arnold Swenson is a duty-bound code enforcement officer who also secretly wishes he didn’t always see infractions everywhere. Finally, there is Ruby, Ralph’s wife, who doesn’t know where her husband goes every weekend and feels her marriage is disintegrating.
