Married couple opens instrument sales/repair shop in Winslow

A new full-service guitar/instrument sales and repair shop recently opened in downtown Winlsow, owned and operated by a married couple who previously owned a similar business in Los Angeles.

The business, Daymaker Music, is co-owned by Paris and Elizabeth Patt. Located on the second floor of The Cove, the small shop offers a blend of part showroom and part repair shop. Paris said they have approximately 30 guitars in stock as of Dec. 5, adding, “which is crazy because it’s a very small space, but we’ve strategically crammed them all in here,” he said.

Daymaker Music is open Wednesday-Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday.

“I’ve worked on acoustic and electric guitars, I’ve worked on harps, orchestral harps. I’ve worked on cellos, violins, violas, pump organs,” Paris said. “I don’t work on woodwinds mostly, but anything strings I tend to repair and restore.”

Regarding the cost and time frame of repair, Paris said it is often material-based and guitar-specific, which, after reviewing the extent of necessary repairs, the customer can then decide if they would like to go through with the work. Major structural repairs can take several weeks to months, and a basic tune-up could take a few days, he said.

“Unlike a lot of other repair shops, we are kind of a combined background. We do everything from structural repairs to full restorations of heritage instruments we’ve worked on, guitars from like the late 1800s all the way up through the modern era. My wife also has a master’s degree in instrument conservation, which is also not a common thing,” he said.

Paris described the importance of having a physical storefront and his inspiration for opening a shop on Bainbridge Island.

“I always loved both building and fostering a kind of musical community. And it’s both tricky in this day and age, especially with the advancement of technology, including AI, all this kind of stuff, where music is changing and how people interact with music is changing. How people learn to play music is changing, so I love the ability to kind of provide a safe space for beginners and people just to kind of try it out,” he said.

Previously, Paris and Elizabeth owned a repair business in Los Angeles called Patt’s Guitar Repair, which the couple operated from 2018 to 2024.

“We did some retail in Los Angeles, but the repair business was like a deluge. There’s millions of people there, and there were only, I think, five or six luthiers serving the greater Los Angeles area. So you can imagine, with the amount of volume of musicians, it was like non-stop, and I kind of just shifted out of retail, just because I didn’t have the time to even focus on retail,” Paris said.

Paris said he’s looking forward to the slower pace of Bainbridge Island and having the opportunity to have both a showroom, boutique and repair shop.

“I find it super interesting that so many people that live here once lived in Southern California. I run into a lot of people, especially musician types, who are very familiar with all the same places like McCabe’s Guitar Shop in Santa Monica, because they lived there for 20 or 30 years and either retired up here or moved here for family. So it’s cool, the kind of community that I’m finding here,” he said.

The slower pace of island life is a “welcome adjustment,” Paris said, and he’s excited about building and fostering a community of musicians. He described his positive experiences interacting with other musically like-minded island residents.

“So many of the people that are playing music up here are very passionate. They just have a completely different mentality. L.A. is such an entertainment capital, in the sense that a lot of the people there are hustling, they’re trying to make it.”

Paris added, “I love helping people. And when you have an instrument that’s not working anymore, or it’s frustrating you, obviously it can frustrate your experience with music. So a lot of what I do is just help people have fun again, that kind of childlike joy, reconnecting with their instrument.”
