BAINBRIDGE – Island Rock Gym will begin a new “Recreational Team” program this fall, which is open to any young person between the ages of 12 and 19 who is interested in spending time with other young climbers while improving upon their climbing endurance, technique and strength.

The fitness center will also be offering many of the same climbing programs as it did last year, which accommodate a wide range of ages, abilities, and interests.

“We were pleased with the enrollment for our programs last school year and we look forward to welcoming new climbers and welcoming back our returners over this next school year,” said gym owner Michele Lang.

Rec Team members will have the opportunity to attend one local competition per season.

The program will offer a transition between the gym’s Junior Rock Club and Competition Team and is also an opportunity for teen climbers interested in honing their skills.

The new program fits the gym’s overall mission of increasing climbing accessibility for the island and surrounding communities very well, Lang explained.

“From the beginning, IRG’s mission has been help create a strong community of conscious climbers that encourages social and environmental growth and promotes safe climbing practices,” Lang said.

“We value safety, fun, accessibility, respect and education.”

Since it opened in September 2013, Island Rock Gym has become Bainbridge’s go-to spot for all things vertical. It’s annual spring Sendfest has become the pivotal indoor climbing event on the island.

“We believe that all of our youth programs fully represent our mission and values and, in particular, we feel the addition of our recreational team program will help us increase our ability to make climbing an accessible, safe and fun sport for any interested young person,” Lang said.
