Two ties stall Spartan boys soccer season

A pair of back-to-back ties stalled what appeared to be a possible comeback for the Bainbridge High varsity boys soccer team last week.

The aftermath of a disappointing loss against Franklin at home on April 18 was, according to BHS Head Coach Drew Keller, something of a do-or-die moment for the Spartans, as it dropped them three points in the standings with only a few matches left on the regular season calendar.

“This was a brutal one,” Keller said. “How we come back from this is going to define the rest of our season.”

How they came back at first was looking pretty good: A 2-0 shutout win against Cleveland, on the road, on April 22.

However, two subsequent consecutive ties — 0-11 against Nathan Hale at home on April 24 and 1-1 against Garfield on the road on April 26 — while not a step in the wrong direction proved not exactly the revival the coach had hoped.

The Spartans were thus left with an overall season record of 5-5-4 (4-5-4 in conference) and ranked 11th in the Metro League standings with only two matches remaining on the regular schedule.

They played their final home match, against West Seattle, on Monday, April 29, and next traveled for the final slated outing, against Eastside Catholic, Wednesday, May 1.
