As part of the longest-running national celebration of books for young people, and to help spread the joy of reading, more than a thousand schools, libraries, and bookstores, including here on Bainbridge Island, will celebrate Children’s Book Week from Monday, April 29 to Sunday, May 5 from coast to coast in all 50 states.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of Children’s Book Week, and the theme is “Read Now • Read Forever.”

All kids and teens at Book Week events will receive a free 2019 Children’s Book Week activity poster designed by Yuyi Morales (while supplies last), and Eagle Harbor Book Company will host several special events — including a bookmark design contest. Kids in kindergarten through eighth grade are invited to submit their bookmark design through Sunday, April 28 at the shop.

The rules are: only one entry per child; bookmark layout page and consent form must be picked up at Eagle Harbor Books before April 28; entries must be accompanied with a signed consent form in order to be judged; design must be based on the theme “Read Around the World”; one winner will be chosen based on creativity and interpretation of the theme; all judges’ decisions are final.

Your bookmark design must be original work, and nothing previously published will be accepted. Also, popular figures (Superman, Disney characters, Harry Potter, etc.) cannot be considered, due to copyright laws.

Entries cannot be returned after judging. The winning entry will be announced at an in-store party at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 5. The winning bookmark will then be professionally printed and available at the shop in late May.
