Big shocker win for Spartan tennis

The Spartans shocked the Bulldogs with a 6-5 upset win over Garfield in varsity tennis.

SEATTLE – The Spartans shocked the Bulldogs with a 6-5 upset win over Garfield in varsity tennis.

Spartan Coach Jennifer Shorr noted that Garfield is one of the toughest teams in the Metro League, and has the defending state champion as their number one player.

Still, it was Bainbridge’s day.

Samantha Jiang clinched the BHS win by beating her nemesis Alex Ferry in No. 1 singles 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (4) in a match that stretched for more than three hours.

“Every player fought for every game,” Shorr reported, and the team excelled in mixed doubles.

The victory pushed Bainbridge to 4-0 on the season.

“Our girls were amazing,” the coach added. “Ellie Van Slyke took out their No. 2 in straight sets (both hard fought).

Lily Welch won a close two setter at No. 3 — 7-6, 6-2 — coming back from down 3-0 in the first set to do it.

Quinn Dassel and Elizabeth Viele did their thing and took an excellent two-set win.”

Maddy Brito and Eli Rogers were solid straight set winners for BHS.

Shorr said the ferry captain announced the win over the speakers during the boat ride back to the island, and the bus did a victory lap at BHS.
