Suzanne Fisher Staples, who won a Newbery Honor for “Shabanu: Daughter of the Wind,” will speak with island authors and book lovers at two separate occasions this week.

First, at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 17 in the Bainbridge Library community room, Staples will offer her thoughts on the writing process and workflow in “Writing Your Way: Take a Voyage of Literary Self-Discovery.”

This event is free and open to the public.

“Everyone who offers advice on writing describes her own personal way of working,” Staples said. “I wouldn’t recommend my own messy, uncomfortable method to anyone, but I can share some thoughts that may help you lean in on your own voyage of literary self-discovery.”

Then, at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 19 in the auditorium of the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art, Staples will present the lecture “The Power of Story,” with slides of desert nomads from Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Staples has written several books for children and young adults set in South Asia. She worked for many years as a reporter and bureau chief for United Press International in Hong Kong, New Delhi, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The suggested donation is $10 per person.
