BPA seeks stars for ‘Romeo & Juliet’

Bainbridge Performing Arts will hold auditions for the upcoming production of “Romeo & Juliet” on Tuesday, March 13 and Thursday, March 15.

One of the Bard’s most popular romantic tragedies, “Romeo & Juliet” famously centers on a long feud between the Montague and Capulet families that disrupts the city of Verona and causes tragic results for Romeo and Juliet.

Revenge, love and a secret marriage force the young star-crossed lovers to grow up quickly — and fate causes them to take their own lives in despair. BPA will transform the Bloedel meadow in this classic tale that’s not to be missed.

Run dates are July 13-15, July 19, July 21-23, July 26-29, with a pay-what-you-can preview July 12.

Rehearsals are May 5 through July 11, on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., plus Saturdays from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The play includes roles for 12 to 16 men, ages 16 and up, and five to 10 women, ages 16 and up.

Those auditioning are requested to prepare a memorized 1- to 1 1/2-minute Shakespearean or classical (pre-1900) dramatic and/or comedic monologue for their audition. The monologue should not be from “Romeo & Juliet,” however.

All roles are open to audition, and interested parties may view a complete listing of characters online at www.bainbridgeperformingarts.org/collections/auditions.

The show will be helmed by Kate Carruthers, who directed “Much Ado About Nothing,” BPA’s fourth annual summertime Shakespeare performance, at the Bloedel Reserve in July 2016.
