Bainbridge Island runners kicked up some dust on a dry and hilly course at Lower Woodland Park in Seattle on Wednesday.

In the cross-country meet, the Bainbridge Island boys and girls competed against Seattle Prep, Bishop Blanchet, Holy Names, O’Dea, and Eastside Catholic in a 3-mile course.  Bainbridge finished fourth overall in both the boys and girls races.

“It was a nice pace,” said Davin Fitzgerald, who led the Bainbridge boys with a strong 10th-place overall finish. Sophomore Lindsay Wienkers was the first female runner, finishing with a personal record time of 21:51 and placing 13th overall.

The team’s goal in this mid-season race wasn’t to break any speed records.

“Most of our top-10 runners and some alternates stayed home in preparation for next Saturday’s Nike Pre-Nationals,” said Coach Anne Howard Lindquist.

Resting the varsity runners gave the up-and-comers a chance to shine.

“Even on the hilly course, many runners’ average mile times are dropping,” Lindquist said.

The top Bainbridge boy finalists were Davin Fitzgerald, Nolan Stockman, Kiwi Sheldon, Arthur Bacon and Lucas Weyland.

The top Bainbridge girl finalists were Lindsay Weinkers, Emily Mather, Emma Fabert, Lydia Weyand and Amy Willerford.

“The race was fun,” said Trevor Wikstrom, “But it was really dusty today because it hasn’t rained in a while.”

Despite the dust, the team felt comfortable at this Greenlake-area park.

“I feel like Woodland is more of a home course than our Bainbridge course because we’ve run it many times,” Fitzgerald said.
