Bainbridge busted in wrestling debut

SEATTLE – The Bainbridge High varsity wrestling team was defeated in their first outing of the year, both by host opponent Eastside Catholic (40-22) and perennial league powerhouse O’Dea (63-12) Thursday, Nov. 30 in Seattle.

The Spartans next marked their first home match on Dec. 7. They will not host another until Bishop Blanchet and Lakeside travel to the Rock to grapple with the island squad at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 11.

Against EC, Bainbridge was not without some moments of excellence.

BHS’ Garrett Swanson pinned Kyle Hohman in 3:50 for a win in the 106-pound opener, and Indigo Weappa claimed a major decision against EC’s Hunter Willis 13-3 in the 126-pound bout, too.

Mac Schelbert pinned EC’s Bryan Meir in 3:13 to claim the 195-pound class, and 285-pound Spartan Sean Hooyer claimed a win by forfeit.

Double forfeit’s negated both the 113- and 220-pound classes.

The Crusaders claimed forfeit wins in the 132-, 152- and 160-pound brackets.

In the 120-pound match, EC’s Dawson Flowers won a 5-0 decision against Cameron Williams. Jared Flowers pinned Bainbridge’s Ben Dunscombe in 4:23 in the 138-pound match. Ben Lombardi also claimed a major decision win against Bainbridge’s Clayton Marsh (12-4) in the 145-pound fracas.

Spartan Nate Michaels (170) was bested 8-1 by Nick Reeves, and EC’s Duncan Hegar (182) pinned Clay Wren in 1:16.

Against O’Dea, the Spartans saw no earned wins.

A double forfeit marred the 132- and 220-pound brackets, and Bainbridge claimed a forfeit win in the 106- and 160-pound slots.

It was downhill from there for the BHS squad.

Kila Robinson claimed a decision win against Cameron Williams (9-6) in the 113-pound match.

Sam Maher (120) pinned Indigo Weappa in 15 seconds.

Michael Aksdahl (126) pinned Aidan McInnis in 58 seconds.

Jack Pauley (138) pinned Ben Dunscomb in 1:30, and Nate Balinbin (145) pinned Clayton Marsh in 1:19 — the exact same time in which Addan Roche (152) pinned Doug Takada.

Likewise, Riley Halverson (170) pinned Nate Michaels in 1:41, Alan Badley (182) pinned Clay Wren in 1:16, Thomas Padilla (195) pinned Mac Schelbert in 5:03 and Misa Morin (285) pinned Sean Hooyer in 1:03.
