Baseball finale marred by loss to Beach

BAINBRIDGE – The final baseball game of the regular season saw the Bainbridge Spartans on the wrong end of a 5-2 romp against Rainier Beach at Sands Field Saturday, April 29.

“Rainier Beach arrived on Bainbridge Island seeking their third win in four games in order to secure the final playoff spot in the upcoming Metro Tournament,” said Spartan Co-Head Coach Bill Ackerley.

They managed to pull it off.

The Vikings’ Gregorio Ramirez threw a complete game, scattering eight Spartan hits while striking out nine and walking only one batter.

Although Rainier Beach only had two hits, they took advantage of some uncharacteristic Spartan mistakes, Ackerley said, as Bainbridge allowed 10 free passes and committed three critical errors.

Beach thus earned the 12th seed in the upcoming Metro Tournament and then played Seattle Prep on Monday at Steve Cox Field.

The Spartans earned Metro’s No. 2 seed (13-2 in conference, 14-4 overall) and a coveted bye in the first round.
