“That’s a lot of pie!”

A giant pumpkin was again placed on display outside of the downtown Winslow office of Johansson-Clark Real Estate. The massive fruit weighed in at 1,522 pounds and was grown by Joel and Mari Lou Holland of Holland’s Giants in Sumner, Washington.

The annual appearance of the giant gourd had been a season tradition at the real estate office. Then, for several years the custom waned, until it was returned in a big way with last year’s 1,791-pound monster.

This year’s spotlight pumpkin may be smaller than last year’s, but it’s still a giant.

According to Holland, one pumpkin pie requires approximately

2 pounds of actual pumpkin, which means that this pumpkin could make 761 pies.

Pumpkins are not vegetables, and are in fact a kind of berry. They belong to the family cucurbitaceae, along with melons, cucumbers, squash and gourds.

The pumpkin will be on display in front of the office of Johansson-Clark Real Estate, 393 Winslow Way East, through the end of the month.
