The Spartans competed in the preliminary round of the 3A state meet at the King County Aquatic Center Friday afternoon.

The top eight finishers in each event advance to the championship round tomorrow. The ninth through 16th place finishers will compete in the consolation round. Both rounds begin at 10:15 a.m. Saturday.

In the 200-meter freestyle, Sarah Grundman (1:58:95) placed sixth and Kay Sterner (1:59:55) placed eighth, qualifying for Saturday’s championship final.

In the 500-meter freestyle, Grundman won her heat and placed fourth overall with a time of 5:11:29. Sterner finished 11th (5:18:87).

Sophomore Tess Harpur placed 10th in the 200-meter individual medley and the 100-meter butterfly.

The Spartans’ 200-meter medley relay placed 15th with a time of 2:00:25, qualifying for the consolation round.
