Sports Roundup – Girls soccer hurt by tough injuries/Gridders rout hapless Lakeside

Published 12:00 pm Wednesday, October 11, 2006

Three key players are sidelined, as the Spartans split a pair with Hale, Lakeside.

Before, the Bainbridge girls soccer team just had to worry about the emotional letdown after their loss to Holy Names.

Now, they must deal with the loss of two of their captains and top players for the foreseeable future.

The Spartans defeated Seattle Prep 1-0 on the road last Tuesday and Nathan Hale 1-0 at home last Thursday, but lost to Lakeside 4-0 Saturday at Lakeside High School.

With goalkeeper Jessie Vincent still out with a broken finger, Bainbridge lost midfielder Maureen Callahan to a broken collarbone while she was playing football on Friday.

Then, they lost forward Zena Hemmen with an ACL injury on Saturday when a Lakeside player ran into her during the second half.

Head coach Anh Tran said a tear was revealed during Hemmen’s MRI, but it’s still unknown at press time whether she’ll need surgery or not.

“They will be missed,” he said. “But people have an opportunity to step up. Now they have to work as a team.

“The way I see it, Mo and Zena got us this far,” Tran continued. “Now it’s up to the team to get us through.”

Bainbridge worked as a team to defeat Seattle Prep last Tuesday.

Lauren Ginder scored the only goal for the Spartans in the 35th minute while the defense and goalkeeper Devon Denis did the rest.

“It was the best I’ve seen us play all year,” Tran said. “We played with intensity and heart.”

Against the Raiders, the Spartans outshot them 16-5, but didn’t score until the 75th minute when Hemmen scored on an assist from Hannah Oshin.

But against Lakeside, Bainbridge couldn’t muster any semblance of an offense while the Lions scored twice in the first half and twice in the second.

“They were everything I thought they were going to be,” Tran said. “They put on a good show.”

Still, Tran said they did their best in hanging with Lakeside and thinks someone is ready to step up – much like when former UW quarterback Billy Joe Hobert stepped in for Mark Brunell while he was out for part of the Huskies’ national championship season in 1991, a team that Tran was a big fan of.

“That’s a nice thing to have an opportunity to have the bench step up and play,” he said. “Brunell went down and Hobert stepped up, so I’m hoping to have the diamond in the rough that can get out there and dominate.”

Bainbridge plays Ingraham today at 5:15 p.m., then travel to Bishop Blanchet Friday.

Gridders rout hapless Lakeside

The Bainbridge football team got back on the winning side of things with a 56-0 blowout of Lakeside Saturday on the road.

It’s the second shutout of the year for the Spartans and the fourth time this year they’ve scored 40 or more points.

“We were a little sluggish in the first quarter,” head coach Andy Grimm said, noting that they had two fumbles.

But Dayton Gilbreath got them back on the right track in the second quarter, as he scored on runs of 10 and 15 yards.

Dayton also scored on a 15 yard pass from Quinton Agosta in the second quarter and added another three yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

Nick Stone ran for two scores of 41 and eight yards, while Ross Cobb had a six-yard touchdown run and Alex Carter caught a 30 yard touchdown pass from Agosta.

Dayton Gilbreath finished with 15 carries for 110 yards. He also had three catches for 48 yards and a kick return for 25 yards to give him 183 all-purpose yards.

It’s his third 100-yard rushing game of the season and his second game with two or more touchdowns.

Nick Stone finished with 10 carries for 119 yards for his first 100-yard game of the season.

Stone also had seven tackles and recovered a fumble, returning it for 34 yards.

Agosta was 6 of 14 for 108 yards with no interceptions. He also had seven carries for 52 yards.

It’s the fifth straight game where he’s had no interceptions.

Bryan Gilbreath had just one catch for 15 yards, but contributed on the defensive side with seven tackles including one for a loss.

Bainbridge (2-1, 5-1) takes on Seattle Prep at West Seattle Stadium before returning home for the regular season finale Oct. 19th against Bishop Blanchet. Game time is at 7 p.m.
