Bainbridge teachers should get five gold stars for the accolades and conferences they’ve been sweeping this fall.
In November, Bainbridge High School Biology and Chemistry teacher Bernice O’Brien shared her passion and joy of teaching with other science teachers from around the country at the National Association of Biology Teachers Conference in Denver, Colorado.
Her presentation, entitled “Now You See It, Now You Don’t: Patterns in Ecology,” discussed the natural world and the unlimited patterns one can explore. Participants engaged in activities that brought to life the Next Generation Science Standards and the role patterns play in biology.
In late October, BHS English teacher and Sakai Differentiation Specialist Kim Kooistra presented at a session of the Washington Association of Educators of the Talented and Gifted Conference.
Kooistra spoke about her work applying concept study and tiered assignments to her ninth-grade students and also discussed the results of recent collaboration workshops from fifth- and sixth-grade language arts teachers.
Odyssey teacher Barry Hoonan recently received the Washington State Literacy Award from the Washington State Literary Association.
He was recognized along with one other teacher for his dedication to improving reading and writing skills for kindergarten through eighth graders. Hoonan also received a $2,500 grant to be used for professional development as part of his award.
