The top response to the Review’s online request for “Movember” photos this year (as voted on by the editor and staff) came from Gary Bedell.
“I am an island resident and have been doing Movember since 2010 – this is Year 5 for me, and the fourth year I have brought Movember to my place of work [Slalom Consulting],” Bedell said.
“Growing a mustache to get people talking about men’s health is a small price to pay to get the word out about this great foundation and the work they do – and something I look forward to doing each year,” he said.
“I worked hard this year to get a Movember team in every single Slalom office: that’s 16 teams in 12 states, in two continents,” Bedell added.
Movember is an annual event involving the growing of mustaches and outlandish facial hair to raise awareness of men’s health issues – such as prostate cancer – and associated charities.
The Movember Foundation runs the Movember event; learn more at www.Movember.com.
“When I talk about the work the Movember Foundation is doing, I mention that 87 cents of every dollar donated goes toward research, treatment and education for prostate, testicular cancer and mental health issues impacting boys and men,” Bedell said.
“The mental health work is something I am very excited to have [as] part of the conversation. I feel we, as a nation, have lots of work to do here to unpack the complexities of mental illness, acknowledge the lack of support for the millions of people suffering from mental illness and work to create affordable, accessible solutions and treatments for people in need of care.”
