The Bainbridge Public Library has announced the winners of its “Readingest School on Bainbridge” contest for summer 2016.

Kitsap Regional Library hosts a summer reading program every year.

This summer, however, the Bainbridge library decided to start a friendly competition among schools on the island to encourage greater participation in the reading program.

All the elementary schools on the island — public and private — were put into two categories, small schools and big schools (those with 100 or more students).

And at the end of summer reading, the schools with the highest participation rates were pronounced “The Readingest Schools on Bainbridge Island” and presented with a trophy to keep at their school for the duration of the school year.

In September, the results were tallied and the winners are the Madrona School and Captain Charles Wilkes Elementary.

Next summer, students at the school should get ready to turn the page: they will be called upon to defend their title or cede victory to another school.
