The Bainbridge High School Marching Band won first place in the 2014 Peninsula Classic, an early season competition for marching bands from across the state, this past weekend.
The Spartans finished first in the “A” division, and also claimed third place overall at the competition in Silverdale.
The BHS band’s Color Guard placed first overall.
The win is the second in three years for the band in the “A” Division, but their third place overall finish is a school record.
The caption win of “High Guard” is a first for BHS, after having finished second each of the last two seasons.
This year’s show is titled, “Monster on the Mountain.” It pairs music from Edvard Grieg’s famous symphonic suite “Peer Gynt,” (“In the Hall of the Mountain King,” and “Aase’s Death”) with selections from Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast.”
This year, the Peninsula Classic featured 12 bands, including five “A” division bands (1-55 members), three “AA” bands (56 to 75 members) and four “AAA” bands (76-99 members). The competition was held Saturday, Sept. 27.
Later this fall, the band will perform at BHS’ remaining three home football games, and will travel to compete at similar competitions in Everett for the Puget Sound Festival of Bands, and then the unofficial state championships for marching band, the Auburn Veterans Day Parade and Field Show Competition.
Chris Thomas is the BHS band director. The Color Guard Instructor is Alisa Mitchell, marching instructor is Alex Dahoda, percussion tech is Nathan Oliver, and guard tech is Bret Harbur.
This year’s drill was written by James Laymen. The wind and front ensemble parts were penned by Don Neptun, and the marching percussion parts were composed by Colin Brown.
Student drum majors include Aila Ikuse and Kathryn Tibbens.
Islanders will get a chance to see the award-winning band perform later this month.
The BHS Fall Band Concert is 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29 in the commons at the high school.
The concert will feature the three concert wind classes, and the marching band, in a special stand-still performance.
