TRAVEL ADVISORY | Lanes to be closed on Tacoma Narrows Bridge for three nights next week
Published 3:48 pm Friday, April 19, 2013
Two of four westbound lanes of Highway 16 across the old Tacoma Narrows Bridge will be closed starting at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, April 23-25.
The two lanes will remain closed until 6 a.m. each following morning. The two remaining westbound lanes will stay open through each night.
The Washington State Department of Transportation said the lane closures are necessary for work on the bridge, built in 1950. Crews will install temporary work access platforms and remove original steel rivets from the bridge’s westernmost expansion joint in preparation for replacing it.
Replacing the westernmost expansion joint will occur over an extended weekend; the date will be announced when plans are finalized.
Drivers can check travel conditions and learn about upcoming construction by downloading the WSDOT mobile app, visiting tacomatraffic.com, or by dialing 511.
