PASCO – At Saturday’s State 3A Cross Country Meet, senior Keith Carlson took advantage of the sunny, windless day to shatter the Bainbridge record for the state course in Pasco, finishing the hilly 5K in 16:15, an amazing 21 seconds faster than his teammate Ryan Cox’s 2012 record.
Only one BHS athlete has ever run a faster 5K anywhere: the 2003 15:57 run by Nolan Amy to win the Metro Championship at Woodland Park.
Carlson’s improvement has been continual, according to BHS coaches. He dropped nearly 3 minutes from his total time in only two years.
Senior Haylee Derrickson also ran a very strong 19:55 5K at state, the fifth fastest time by a Bainbridge girl on the Pasco course.
The previous week, Derrickson set a personal record (19:49) at the SeaKing District meet on the muddy Woodland Park Course, the second fastest time for a BHS girl runner on that course.
Junior Devon Reynolds surged in the last half of the season to qualify for the state meet out of the highly competitive SeaKing District, running a personal record 16:51 through the puddles of Woodland Park.
At Pasco, he closed on the field in the last mile, finishing in a respectable 17:05, the eighth fastest Bainbridge time ever at Pasco.
BIXC runners will wrap up their season with a final post-season competition, the Nike Regional Meet in Boise, Idaho, Saturday, Nov. 15.
