Gear Grinders get podium finishes

GIG HARBOR – Bainbridge Island’s Gear Grinders high school and middle school mountain bike racing teams had a successful second race of the season on Sunday, April 17 at 360 Park near Gig Harbor.

Eleven high school racers and 13 middle school racers competed in the Washington Student Cycling League race, which fielded 240 racers from across the state.

The Gear Grinders team had four podium finishers: Olivia Cavalluzzi won fourth place in her high school girls division; Sam Kuznetsov won second place in the seventh-grade boys division; Samantha Campbell won second place and Kylie Turner won fourth place in the sixth-grade girls division.

Points were contributed to the high school team by Cavalluzzi, Tessa Vroom, Erin Thackray, Abe Muldrow and Aidan Brady.

The Gear Grinders high school team is currently ranked sixth out of 21 high school teams. The middle school team is ranked sixth out of 16 middle school teams.

Points for the middle school team were chipped in by  Samantha Campbell, Kylie Turner, Samuel Kuznetsov, Henry Sauermann and Sean Westerhout.
