It’s Throwback Thursday, and time for a dip in the Hot Tub Time Machine as we sink back into history to see what was making news on Bainbridge Island oh so many years ago.
This week, we dust off the July 11, 1957 edition.
10 Pages – 10 Cents.
In a departure from other issues recently examined, we note today that the typesetter had apparently discovered the tray of bold-face letters, which hitherto must have been kept under lock and key.

Two Move To Slow Rush on Span Site
Two attempts were being made this week to slow-down Gov. Albert D. Rosellini’s rush to select a site for the cross-Sound bridge.
Francis Pearson, newest member of the State Toll Bridge Authority, told The Review he would ask the TBA, of which the governor is chairman, to take an independent check of all possible sites before selecting one.
And State Rep. Pat Nicholson, Bremerton Democrat, wrote the governor against “undue haste” which might prove to be “a waste of time and a waste of money.” He urged “patience and thoroughness.”
Mr. Nicholson, applauding the governor’s desire to get action on the bridge project, warned that the 1959 State Legislature might find a hastily-conceived plan “unsatisfactory, causing further delay.”
CC Ready For Mayor’s Visit
Mayor Gordon S. Clinton, Seattle, will pay an official visit to the Island July 18, the Bainbridge Island Chamber of Commerce announced this week.
Jack Gordon, Ferncliff, Chamber [p]resident, said the Seattle mayor would discuss cross-Sound transportation pollution of Island beaches, ferry terminal traffic and the Island’s place, if any, in the proposed Seattle metropolitan district.
He will arrive at 4 o’clock in the afternoon. After a tour of the Island, the mayor and Chamber directors will dine at Mr. Gordon’s home.
Wayne Jacobi, Port Madison, Chamber vice-president, and a personal friend of the youthful Seattle mayor, is coordinating plans for Mr. Clinton’s visit.
Don Is Better Now, Back On Paper Route
Don James, son of Mr. and Mrs. George F. James, Winslow, was back on his route delivering a Bremerton newspaper this week after spending a week in bed following a bicycle accident July 2.
Don lost control of his bicycle while delivering a paper to the Pern Clifton residence, Winslow, crashing into a stone wall and receiving a minor skull concussion.
Judge Lenient In Horn-Blowing Case
Justice of the Peace Wilbur Nystrom this week said he “went easy” on Ronald T. Denton, West Blakely, 18 years old, and Benjamin R. Hardy, Seattle, 20, accused of disorderly conduct, because their parents appeared in court with the youths and “were concerned with their punishment.”
The two youths were arrested by Deputy Sheriff Ken Chaussee late Thursday night after he observed them standing in Lynwood Center blowing on trumpets as loudly as possible.
In a special court session Saturday afternoon, Judge Nystrom fined the youths $25 each for disorderly conduct charge, plus costs, suspended for good conduct for the next 12 months.
In another incident relating to the Fourth of July, Fred E. Olsen, owner of an upholstery shop in Port Blakely, told Mr. Chaussee he had been shot at with a gun.
He said that a group of youths in a green sedan pulled up beside him and took a shot at him, but he did not see a gun. Mr. Chaussee said he feels that it was a firecracker. He could not find a bullet hole.

Divorce Upsets Girl, 10; She Takes Sleeping Pills
Deputy Sheriff Ken Chaussee reported that a ten-year-old Island girl took an overdose of sleeping pills Tuesday morning and was treated at a Winslow clinic.
Upon contacting the girl’s 25-year-old mother, he was advised that the girl has been despondent lately due to being parted from her brother and sisters in a divorce action.
The girl told Mr. Chaussee she knew the pills might kill her. Mr. Chaussee took the girl to the Juvenile Home at Port Orchard, after strenuous objections by the mother.
