BAINBRIDGE – The Summer 2016 catalog of Bainbridge Island Metro Park & Recreation District youth sports offerings boasts a bevy of athletic adventures, some going on now and others set for throughout the season, including tennis, fencing, cross country, martial arts and cheerleading.
Tennis offerings, instructed by certified pros at the Bainbridge Athletic Club, include “Beginning-Intermediate for ages 6-8,” “Beginning-Intermediate for ages 9-12” and “Tennis for Teens” for ages 13-18. These courses are typically three or four days long and run throughout the summer.
Fencing also offers two age-specific courses; “Pee Wee Fencing” for those 6 to 8 and a more advanced class for those 9 and up.
Junior Cheerleading, for ages 7-13, will begin in August in support of the Bainbridge Youth Football Team.
The Bainbridge Blazers Cross Country Club, for those in grades five through eight, will also kick off in the fall, with an emphasis on improving stamina, speed and running form. They will compete in several meets against other middle school teams. Organizers note it’s a great way for kids to enjoy a healthy and confidence-building activity. Head coach Jim Whiting and volunteer coaches bring decades of running and coaching experience and provide a positive, supportive environment. Beginners are especially encouraged to participate; no previous running experience is necessary.
The fee includes a hooded sweatshirt and use of team uniforms. Scholarships are available.
There are two courses for kids looking to learn martial arts, one for those 3-5, “Play As The Way Dragons,” and one for those 6-9, “Little Champs.” They both run throughout the season.
