UPDATE | No declaration of victory yet in Position 5, Bainbridge fire board race

In a night of blowout elections, one race has turned out to be something of a cliffhanger: The race for the Position 5 seat on the board for the Bainbridge Island Fire Department.

In a night of blowout elections, one race has turned out to be something of a cliffhanger: The race for the Position 5 seat on the board for the Bainbridge Island Fire Department.

Theresa “Teri” Dettmer was winning with 50.9 percent of the vote in the initial vote tally.

Her opponent, Holly vanSchaick, has collected 48.8 percent of the vote.

With a total of 4,045 votes counted in the race, and the next vote tally expected late Wednesday, Dettmer was taking a wait-and-see approach.

“I guess we have to wait a few more days to see the rest of the results.  But I am honored that the — so far, anyway — voters have supported me,” Dettmer said.

The gap in the race is 88 votes.

Dettmer said she had no immediate guess on why her race was so close.

“I think the fact that my opponent has firefighting expereince was a real help to her,” she said.

vanSchaick could not be reached for comment on Election Night.
