Spartans swamp Crusaders at home in boys varsity swimming

BAINBRIDGE – Sam Alpaugh had a state-qualifying time in the 100-yard backstroke as the Spartans opened the season with a win in swimming and diving Tuesday with a 128-49 victory over visiting Eastside Catholic at the Bainbridge Aquatics Center.
Alpaugh raced to first in 55.10 (the 3A qualifying mark is 56.99).
Bainbridge swept to wins in the top three spots in the race. Fellow Spartans Arthur Bacon (1:08.35) and Sam Kapel (1:21.12) were second and third, respectively.
Alpaugh also took first in the 200-yard freestyle, and finished in 1:53.83.
Bainbridge picked up wins in the 200-yard medley relay, the 200-yard individual medley, the 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays, and the 100-yard breaststroke.
The Spartans also dominated in the 50- and 500-yard freestyle races, winning the top three spots in each.
Parker Bushey won the 50-yard freestyle in 23.14, while James Bullock was first in the 500-yard freestyle for the Spartans and finished in 5:05.30.
CJ Waite won the 100-yard breaststroke for Bainbridge in 1:04.29.
Dylan Garthwaite placed first in 1-meter diving for BHS, with a score of 168.05.
Bainbridge’s Gabe Emert was second, at 153.35.
