Spartan relay team qualifies for state

BAINBRIDGE – Just two meets into the season, four more Spartans punched their ticket to the state 3A swimming championships.
The Bainbridge High 200-yard medley relay team of Sam Alpaugh, CJ Waite, David Jenkins and Parker Bushey took first place in the race during last week’s home meet against Roosevelt.
The speedy foursome won in 1:43.83 (the state-qualifying mark is 1:44.50) and bested the Rough Riders’ A Relay team by five seconds, approximately.
In Bainbridge’s first meet of the season, Sam Alpaugh had a state-qualifying time in the
100-yard backstroke.
The Spartans also enjoyed their second team win of the season against Roosevelt in the Dec. 12 meet at the Bainbridge Island Aquatics Center.
Bainbridge outpointed Roosevelt 112-70, and the Spartans won 11 of 12 events.
Bainbridge again dominated in the 100-yard backstroke.
The Spartans took the top three spots, with Alpaugh finishing first in 1:09.29, followed by Adrien Chaussabel (1:10.50) and Jack Kapel (1:14.70); district- and Metro-qualifying times, respectively.
BHS also competed well in the 200-yard freestyle, with James Bullock in first, 1:53.14; Henry Bacon in third, 2:06.59; and Kapel in fourth, 2:09.67.
Spartan freshman Dylan Garthwaite again placed first in 1-meter diving. He finished with a score of 209.95.
Roosevelt’s Michael Flynn was second with 196.15.
