Bainbridge lost against two of the top teams in 2A Flag Football Jan. 15
The Bainbridge Spartans (3-9, 2-8 in Olympic League) fell to the Klahowya Eagles (9-2, 6-2 OL) at home 21-7, and also lost to Sequim (9-1) later that evening 28-21.
“Klahowya and Sequim are right up there with Kingston [in the top of the league standings],” Bainbridge coach Tom Breen said.
Klahowya struck first with a touchdown on their second offensive possession with a touchdown pass, giving them a 7-0 lead early.
Bainbridge managed to put together a strong second offensive possession of their own, converting multiple 4th downs after starting the ball on their own one-yard line. However, they turned the ball over on downs for the second time of the game.
The Eagles drove down on the Bainbridge and converted another touchdown, giving them a 14-0 lead.
Bainbridge made a quarterback change, and it proved to pay off as backup Avery MacGregor hit wide receiver Sofia Kochevar for a touchdown, making the score 14-7 at halftime.
“I’ve got two quarterbacks that have different styles,” Breen said. “One’s more like Lamar Jackson, kind of a mobile quarterback, and one’s more like a deep passer. And I saw the defense was giving up deep balls.”
Bainbridge kicked off their first drive of the second half by converting multiple first downs, but was unable to score a touchdown.
Klahowya went down the field for another score, converting a 4th down to get themselves in the end zone to push their lead to 21-7, ultimately sealing the victory.
“The thing about our league is there’s no one dominant team,” Breen said. “Every team battles against every other team, I mean, to the bitter end, and they’re close games.”
