Bainbridge Island briefs

Ferry terminal paving

A paving project started Aug. 25, at the Bainbridge Island ferry terminal parking area, Washington State Ferries announced. Parking will be very limited in the lot directly outside of the main terminal entrance. This is the lot operated by U-Park System and is connected to the pickup and drop-off zone by the terminal building.

All other paid parking lots near the terminal will stay open and available. Americans with Disabilities Act stalls and the pickup/drop-off area in this lot will also remain open for most of the project. The work is expected to take about two months.

Pets on ferries

Washington State Ferries will be trialing an updated pet policy through February 2026. During this 6-month trial, dogs on leashes are allowed in the passenger cabins of ferries. Specifics include:

-Big dogs must stay on the floor, not on seats. -Small dogs should be on their owner’s lap or in a carrier.

-Owners must control their pets and clean up after them.

-Crews may direct owners to move pets to a motor vehicle or outside deck if needed for safety or bad behavior.

-All other pets must stay in a crate or carrier, except service animals.

Arts funding

ArtsFund and Allen Family Philanthropies (formerly known as the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation) are providing $10 million in unrestricted funding; this time to 930 state arts and culture organizations through the Community Accelerator Grant.

In Kitsap County, funds support 28 local organizations with an average grant size of $7,410, including Bainbridge Artisan Resource Network, the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art, and Kids in Concert.

KPUD funding

Kitsap Public Utility District recently announced it has been preliminarily awarded funding in the Washington State Broadband Office’s Benefit of the Bargain Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment program, part of a $1.2 billion statewide investment to close the digital divide.

KPUD’s preliminary award covers seven of the eight project areas it applied for, a news release says. When combined into a single large project, KPUD’s award will bring high-speed broadband to almost 4,000 homes across Kitsap County via all-fiber builds. The preliminary federal award results in $14.98 million for KPUD.

“This is an exciting milestone for Kitsap,” said Angela Bennink, KPUD general manager. “High-speed internet is essential for education, healthcare, business, and daily life. This preliminary award represents a big step toward ensuring every resident of Kitsap County has access to reliable, affordable broadband.”

Quilt festival

Mark your calendars to attend the free Bainbridge Quilt Festival Sept. 13 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at Winslow Green.

The festival is held in collaboration with the Creative Thread Festival. Kids will enjoy a provided “seek and find” activity to engage them with the roughly 200 quilts on display. There will be a table with information about the quilt-making process and an activity to design your own quilt block. All attendees can vote for their favorite quilt for the Viewer’s Choice Award (The top three winners get quilt shop gift cards).

Attendees can purchase $2 raffle tickets to win this year’s “Give and Take” raffle quilt made by Bainbridge Island Modern Quilt Guild members, and can purchase $20 homemade mini-quilt coaster sets.

All proceeds help support the cost of the quilt show and quilting education activities.

Saint Cecilia concert

The world premiere of “The Saint Cecilia Requiem” by Patrick Stoyanovich will occur Sept. 21 at 3 p.m. at Saint Cecilia’s Church on Bainbridge Island.

The multi-movement contemporary work will feature the chamber performance by professionals based in Boston and New York: vocalists Elaine Daiber and Thomas West, violinist Sophia Stoyanovich, and pianist Derek Wang.

“Known for their artistry, versatility, and creative curiosity, all four have consistently sought out compelling and unconventional projects that stretch beyond traditional boundaries,” a news release says. “From innovative chamber music and interdisciplinary collaborations to new music commissions and adventurous programming, they are united by a shared commitment to exploring fresh artistic ground while engaging audiences in meaningful ways.”

General admission tickets are $30 and can be purchased at the door or online at saintceciliarequiem.com/

Forest investment

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Forest Service recently announced that the Great Peninsula Conservancy will receive $600,000 through the Community Forest Program to establish the 359-acre Green Mountain East Community Forest.

The new community forest will conserve working timberlands in the Blue Hills of the Kitsap peninsula, just west of Bremerton, while also protecting public access to a regional trail system that draws more than 80,000 visitors each year, a news release says. Actively managed for sustainable forestry, Green Mountain East will continue to support local jobs and provide timber for nearby mills.

“The Green Mountain East Community Forest represents the power of partnerships to meet both conservation and community needs,” said Jacque Buchanan, regional forester for the Forest Service’s Pacific Northwest region. “By conserving these working forests, we’re ensuring they continue to support local jobs, provide timber, and offer generations of Washingtonians a place to hike, explore, and connect with nature.”
