Epic victory for BHS swimmers

BAINBRIDGE – For the first time in recent memory, Bainbridge Island dealt Mercer Island a stunning defeat in boys swimming and diving this week at the Bainbridge Aquatics Center.
Mercer Island has been dominating in the sport in recent years, with six 3A state titles since 2006 — and second-place finishes in every year the crown eluded the islanders.
The Spartans prevailed, however, with a 116-69 win.
Equally fantastic, though, were the state-qualifying performances for two Spartan teams in the 200-yard medley relay, 100-yard butterfly, 100-yard backstroke and 400-yard freestyle relay.
In the 200 medley relay, the Spartan A team of Garrett Waite, Kevin Houseman, Makai Ingalls and Andy Yalung placed first with a state time of 1:40.81, a nice improvement over their seed time of 1:45.00.
The Spartan B Relay team of Sam Alpaugh, Aron Markow, Jem Bullock and Aidan Wagner placed second and also punched their ticket to state by finishing in 1:44.06. (The state 3A qualifying mark is 1:44.50).
In the 100 fly, Garrett Waite won the race with a qualifying time of 53.87.
Ingalls backed up his fine showing in the 200 medley relay with a win in the 100-yard backstroke.
He took first, and qualified for state, in 56.85.
The 400 free relay team of Wagner, Parker Bushey, Waite and Ingalls won their race with a state time of 3:24.71.
