Jewish community celebrates in BI

The Chabad Jewish Center of Bainbridge Island and North Kitsap celebrated Hanukkah at Winslow Green recently with the lighting of a 9-foot-tall Menorah.

More than 250 attendees gathered Nov. 28, the first night of the eight-day Festival of Lights, to light a Menorah displayed at the gazebo in Winslow Green during Hanukkah.

This is the fourth annual in-person event celebrating the Hanukkah miracle and the victory of light over darkness. It featured Hanukkah music, cookie decorating, crafts for children, and smaller Menorahs and candles were distributed to participants to light at home.

“Hanukkah is a time when people sit with family and friends filling their homes with light and joy,” said Rabbi Mendy Goldshmid, who co-directs Jewish Center with his wife Shaina. “The public Hanukkah celebration is about sharing this light and joy with the broader community and the entire Bainbridge Island.”

His wife added: “After the difficulties, we have all experienced in the past two years, the importance of community has never been more evident. We’re thrilled to have been able to safely host this family-friendly event and share the incredible feeling of community with so many.”
