Book exchange

Get together with other book lovers and swap books you’re ready to let go of, and get some new ones in return at the Swip and Swap Book Exchange from 1-4 p.m. Oct. 18 at Eleven Winery.

“It’s not just about taking home a stack of books, but also meeting others who love to read and chatting about what you’re currently reading and recommending some good books,” a news release says.

Meet Councilmember Deets

Bainbridge Island Councilmember Joe Deets is having his office hours Oct. 25 from 10 a.m. to noon at CUPS Espresso on 123 Bjune Drive SE in Winslow.

Everyone is welcome to come and meet with him to talk about city business.

Author talk

Acclaimed wildlife advocate and author Mitch Friedman will appear at Eagle Harbor Books Nov. 6 at 6:30 p.m. for a reading and signing of his new memoir and strategy guide, Conservation Confidential: A Wild Path to a Less Polarizing and More Effective Activism.

The book chronicles Friedman’s evolution from radical Earth First! activism to building a more collaborative, results-oriented conservation movement, per a news release.

The event is free and open to the public, and books will be available for purchase and signing.

Shelter volunteers

Kitsap County Human Services Housing and Homelessness Division is recruiting volunteers for its Severe Weather Shelter program, which will operate from Nov. 1 through March 31, 2026. The shelters provide safe, warm overnight accommodations during severe weather events.

Volunteers help with tasks, including shelter setup, guest check-in, and morning closing procedures. No prior experience is necessary—just a willingness to help fellow community members during their time of need, per a news release.
