Memorial Day observance

American Legion, Colin Hyde Post 172 will observe Memorial Day at the Bainbridge High School Veterans Memorial Monument, located next to the east end of the football stadium, May 26 at 11:40 a.m.

The event is open to everyone to honor and remember the servicemen and servicewomen who sacrificed their lives for the United States in wars and conflicts over the years, per a news release. Among those participating in the event are local community and city leaders, along with Scout Troops 1564 nd 1804.

The observance also includes a short program held at the American Legion Hall’s Bud Hawk Memorial Park. Hawk was a BI resident who fought in World War II and was a recipient of the Medal of Honor. He later returned to BI as a school teacher.

Listening session

Low Income Housing Institute is hosting a community listening session on the affordable mixed-use residential and commercial development proposal for 625 Winslow Way E. May 29 at 3 p.m. at Bainbridge Performing Arts Center.

All are welcome to listen and share their thoughts.

Deets office hours

Bainbridge Island City Councilmember Joe Deets is having his office hours May 24, from 10 a.m. to noon at CUPS Espresso on 123 Bjune Drive SE in Winslow.

Everyone is welcome to come and meet with him to talk about city business.

Detainee released

Air Force veteran Joe St. Clair, whose parents live in Hansville, has been released from being held hostage in Venezuela as a political prisoner for the last several months.

State Sen. Maria Cantwell released a statement on behalf of St. Clair’s release.

“I’m thrilled Joe has been released and will be reunited with his family. His parents were relentless advocates for their son. I thank the Trump administration for working to secure his release.”

Officer-involved shooting

The Kitsap County Incident Response Team is investigating an officer-involved shooting in the Fred Meyer parking lot off Highway 303 in unincorporated Bremerton just before midnight May 14, where a man was hospitalized but in stable condition from a gunshot injury.

Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office deputies and a State Patrol Trooper were on scene, per KCSO. No law enforcement officers were injured.

KCSO deputies responded to a 911 call before midnight from an employee of a mobile surveillance company reporting a possible prowler in the Fred Meyer parking lot on Hwy 303. While investigating and making contact with the suspect, a deputy discharged their firearm, injuring him, per KCIRT. The injury is not life-threatening and the man was transported to Tacoma General Hospital.

KCIRT is gathering details and Bremerton police are leading the investigation. Due to KCSO’s involvement in the incident, that agency will not participate in the investigation.

Dead body found

Poulsbo police responded to a call May 17 at about 4 p.m., where a passerby flagged down a Kitsap County sheriff’s deputy near Fish Park. The report was of a dead body found in the water.

Kitsap County chief medical examiner, Dr. Lindsey Harle, performed an autopsy and the body was identified as Maxwell R. Bowen, a 36-year-old male with a Kitsap address listed.

Cause and manner of death are pending return of toxicology. There is no foul play suspected.

Vaccine clinic

The Kitsap Public Health District will be hosting free, routine immunizations for children 18 and younger at its downtown Bremerton location May 23 from 9-11 a.m. and 1-3 p.m.

Vaccines available by appointment include MMR, Varicella, Hepatitis B, Tdap/DTaP, HPV, Meningococcal, Pneumococcal, Haemophilus influenzae (HIB) and Polio.

COVID-19 vaccines are available without an appointment (for children six months and older), per KPHD.

Festival

Live Well Kitsap – KitsapFest, a free community outdoor event, will take place June 21 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Silverdale Waterfront Park.

Organizers say the purpose of the event is to get out to the park, be in community, enjoy live music, food trucks, karaoke, and entertainment for the little ones, while discovering the myriad resources in Kitsap, per a news release.

There will also be demos, educational elements, and prize giveaways.

Opiate conversations

Salish Behavioral Health Administrative Services will be holding two upcoming community conversations in Kitsap County about opioid use.

The first one is May 27 from 5:30-7 p.m. at the Poulsbo Kitsap Regional Library. The second one is May 29 from 5:30-7 p.m. at South Kitsap Fire & Rescue station 31.

The conversations are opportunities to share ideas, concerns and support for improving services and resources for those affected by Opioid Use Disorder in the community, per a news release.

The conversations are open to the public.

Shelter RFPs

Kitsap County released a Request for Proposals from qualified applicants for the provision of emergency shelter beds, serving residents who have lost their permanent housing and/or need a temporary place to sleep.

The Shelter Operations RFP focuses closely on delivery of services for one aspect of the Kitsap Homeless Crisis Response and Housing Plan, per a news release. It is anticipated that the county will contract with multiple eligible organizations to provide emergency shelter beds of various types.

Eligible applicants/recipients may include: city or county governments, tribes, public housing authorities, public and private IRS-certified nonprofit organizations 501(c)(3), local development corporations, and faith-based organizations.
